In 2005 the WSFD theme continued to promote the second-hand smoke message, with a focus on domestic settings such as the home and car. Fresh, vibrant imagery lifted from the WSFD 'wishes' television commercial was utilised as campaign creative.
The slogan for the campaign was "Wish for a smokefree world. Wishes can come true. Wawatatia he ao auahi kore. Ka tutuki pea nga moemoea". The 'wishes' theme was versatile and offered scope for different communities to adapt the campaign locally. The overall goal for WSFD 2005 was to support and encourage the establishment of more Smokefree environments. Objectives included:
- Focusing attention on the benefits of being Smokefree in several settings, such as 'Smokefree homes', 'Smokefree marae' and other relevant settings.
- Providing local and national tobacco control workers with resources, media releases etc. to enable them to promote the chosen theme.
Regional teams around New Zealand organised a range of activities and events to celebrate and promote WSFD 2005, supported by resources provided by the WSFD group.
Some of the promotional events that were held around the county in 2005 included;
Auckland region
Manawatu region
Wellington
Otago region
Whanganui region

Auckland Region World Smokefree Celebrations 2005
Tobacco control ain't easy... but it sure can be rewarding at the best of times; for example, when a determined smokefree workforce comes together to strategise and celebrate World Smokefree Day amongst a regional population of 1.2 million people. A wide range of events surged through Auckland this year, organised by an equally vast and talented network of PHOs, PHUs, cessation services & individuals from the community wholeheartedly supporting wishes for a smokefree world.
Over 1 million customers of all ages, family, work & cultural backgrounds transport themselves to The Warehouse stores nationally per day. What better place to meet such as broad reach of people as possible in the short space of time available!!
Our objectives were to raise awareness, promote smokefree homes & families, especially the 'take the smoke outside' message, to celebrate the achievements people have made towards becoming smokefree and to make a smokefree wishes for themselves, for loved ones or for the world.
A collective of organisations, and supporters, held a broad range of displays and promoted World Smokefree Day at six branches of The Warehouse at Albany, Newmarket, Henderson, Botany Downs, Manukau City and Clendon. In keeping with the theme "Wishing for a Smokefree World," at all the stores, people were invited to step forward and make a smokefree wish, either for themselves or someone they knew. Everyone who made a wish went in the draw to win a smokefree prize pack at each of the six stores. As a result of the World Smokefree Day planning efforts this year, the Auckland Regional Public Health Service formed a relationship with national health & safety manager of The Warehouse stores, Dr David Farlow. The service is supporting his efforts in strengthening smokefree workplace policies for the organisation nationwide.
Other venues in Auckland have also included Middlemore, North Shore, Waitakere & Auckland Hospitals, the Manukau SuperClinic, Greenlane Clinical Centre and the Mason Clinic. Also included were Auckland Smokefree schools Councils launch and a range of exciting events that were held on Waiheke Island. These included a 3 on 3 basketball competition, a celebration at the flea market, meeting and greeting passengers on the Waiheke ferry and a kaumatua dinner all focusing on wishing for a smokefree world and promoting smokefree lifestyles. Mangere Town Centre was ablaze with colour and & music for the Pacifica event. Four pacific Island early childhood groups from Nuie, Samoa, Tonga and Cook Islands came to fully support World Smokefree Day and the smokefree teams from around Auckland. The Whiu whanau took centre stage with their auahi kore production of Maui. Next came the unique pacific style aerobics which had almost everyone in the shopping mall swaying their hips to the sounds of beautiful pacific island beats. Throughout the day, community members and health service providers promoted smokefree through a range of different presentations.
For the Auckland region, the World Smokefree Day planning and promotion activities has been worthwhile not just for the populations we've engaged with & promoted smokefree lifestyles to, but for ourselves as a tobacco control workforce.
We've learned about each other, how to work together, how to pool our resources, how to strategically utilise our social marketing skills effectively across our region, how to blend and acknowledge different ideas and ways of working collaboratively.
Most of all, we've made a difference by making small achievable steps to encourage smokefree homes and cars... and we've enjoyed this journey!!
This years World Smokefree Day group was hosted by Raukura Hauora O Tainui. They managed and utilised the skills of each contributing organisation, ensured that financial and resource allocations were organised and that the group maintained a collaborative focus throughout the planning and implementation phases.

Manawatu - World Smoke-free Day Events 2005 Smoke-free Central
MidCentral Health
The first event held in celebration of World Smoke-free Day 2005 was at the WellChild Expo held at the Convention Centre, Palmerston North. We had a stand with the WSFD posters, balloons and information on Smoke-free homes and cars. We ran a competition for those pledging their cars to go Smoke-free. They went in a draw for a car Vallet to the value of $85.00. When the winner was phoned 2 weeks later she said she had stopped taking her cigarettes in the car with her and they were moving to a new house which she also declared smoke-free.
Massey University promoted World Smoke-free day as part of their "Health Day" on May 25th. This went very well with Penny, the Student Health Centre nurse engaging with students to promote her smoking cessation service.'
The staff from Te Runanga O Raukawa Whiti Ora Smoking Cessation programme put up statics displays in the Levin and Otaki Libraries and also took part in a Marae based health Day.
The six schools in our region who run Smoke-free Action Programmes held events on WSFD. They were resourced through PHU. Some of their activities included a Jelly eating competition, Pavement Art, Smoke-free poster and a smoke-free jingle competition. The jingles were played on the local Levin radio station. Dannevirke High school sent brochures on "Making your home Smoke-free" with their school newsletter. Waiopehu College held a sausage sizzle.
Whakapai Hauora ran a colouring competition in 2 primary schools and resources were distributed to other organisations for their celebrations.
Our big event on May 31st was our traditional Smoke-free Intermediate Netball Tournament. Those schools who receive the sponsorship for their netball teams also promoted WSFD within their schools the week leading up to the tournament. The Smoke-free Trophy this year was won by Palmerston North Intermediate Normal.

World Smokefree Day Activities for the Wellington Region 2005
Hutt Hospital
The hospital undertook a few activities the week before and during WSF Day week. They issued a media release, put up posters on all wards and notice boards, put an article and image on the Hutt Valley DHB intranet and held a Smokefree debate on WSF Day for the Grand Round session at lunchtime on 31st May. The topic of the debate was "Tobacco Companies should be allowed to sponsor the Hutt Valley DHB Coronary Care Unit". The topic was chosen to provide an opportunity for discussion around a (hypothetical) controversial tobacco issue and to have some fun. The speakers were from Hutt Hospital, the Ministry of Health, Allen and Clarke Consultants and Regional Public Health. We received lots of positive feedback about the debate and managed to fill the hospital auditorium.
Wairarapa DHB
Choice Health decided to do a Smokefree homes project, where people could fill in a form and register their home as Smokefree. Information on this project went out in a newsletter to all schools. There were 5 draws for houses to have smoke alarms installed by the Fire Service and another draw for an outdoor patio heater. The Cancer Society funded the radio ads for this project.
Kapi Mana Netball Association Health Day
The health days are an initiative of Tumai Mo Te Iwi PHO in Porirua, where a different health issue is promoted every Saturday of the netball season. Smokefree was promoted on the Saturday before WSF Day. The organisations involved that day included Regional Public Health, Heart Foundation, Cancer Society, Sport Porirua and the local Porirua Fire Service. The focus of the day was WSF Day/Smokefree homes. If people answered a Smokefree quiz they went in the draw to win smoke alarms that were installed by the Fire Service.
Porirua College
The college embraced WSF Day and held a week of activities in honour of WSF Day. Every day they had a trivia question or activity, on WSF Day they held a silly sports day, with students versus staff, on the Wednesday they had a loony lunch day, on Friday they held a mufti day and the Smokefree car wash fundraiser was cancelled on the Saturday due to the weather.
Hutt Valley High School
Held a Smokefree poster competition for the junior and senior students.

Otago
The Otago Smokefree Group consisting of The National Heart Foundation, Cancer Society, Public Health South, smoking cessation providers from the Otago District Health Board, Diabetes Otago, Arai Te Uru Whare Hauora and The Asthma Society joined forces to work towards the promotion of World Smokefree Day for 2005.
Strategies included the delivery of resources to schools across the Otago region, a two page spread in the local community newspaper, representation at the Youth Expo for year 10 Otago students, and several days gathering wishes from smokers and non-smokers 'wishing for a smokefree world'.
Support from the public to wish for a smokefree world was overwhelming and we were especially pleased to gain support from Dunedin City's Mayor Peter Chin who wrote: 'It is my wish for all our children to live in a smokefree environment. I am thankful that we are progressing in that direction and for strong community support of the smokefree legislation'.
The two page spread in the local community news paper highlighted the Wish for a Smokefree World message by proving that wishes can come true through a success story by Peter Kesha.
The Youth Expo was another great place to impart the 'wishes' theme by asking year 10 students to make a 'smokefree wish' on a wishing wall. The Expo was especially for year 10 students and was about promoting help seeking behaviour. We collected many wishes and over 200 surveys from students asking about their smoking habits.
The Otago Smokefree Group also spent two days in the hospital foyer collecting wishes from hospital staff and members of the public. The Otago Nuggets made smokefree wishes on our 'wishing scroll' with the Otago Daily Times running a story on this.
Channel 9 the local television station also used our activities for World Smokefree Day and our key message as their leading story for the 31st of May 2005. Our key wish was for community based cessation services in Dunedin. The wishing scrolls gained hundreds of smokefree wishes and one scroll even found its way to Damien O'Connor to reiterate our wishes.

Auahi Kore Smoke Free Whanganui Network
'Take the smoke outside' got an extra boost around the Whanganui rohe for World Smoke Free Day. Our Network ran Smoke Free Homes and Cars Competitions in Whanganui and in the rural Waimarino and Northern Rangitikei areas.after hearing about how successful these were elsewhere.
Entrants were recruited during April and pledged to make their homes and cars totally auahi kore from 02 May. In Whanganui, we held two promotions at the Warehouse Shopping Centre which attracted plenty of interest. In Ohakune, Vivienne Hoeta and Darnella Hawira also held a similar successful promotion at the New World Supermarket. Our WSFD resources were put to full use during these promotions. We also participated in a live broadcast on Awa FM with announcers continuing to promote Competition kaupapa over the following weeks. During May, we used media opportunities to encourage entrants to keep to their pledge. We announced winners on Awa FM on WSFD.
Resene, Edmonds Commercial and Harvey Round Motors sponsored prizes in Whanganui, the first prize being product and labour to redecorate the winner's newly smoke free living room and second prize being a full car valet. In the Waimarino, Vivienne and her team put together great prizes with sponsorship from eight firms including Ohakune Benchmark Building Supplies, Ruapehu Farm Supplies and Ohakune New World.
Many Network participants also organised their own agency activities to mark WSFD. These included in-house competitions at UCOL, Te Oranganui Iwi Health Authority and the Whanganui District Health Board. Ngati Hauiti at Rata also hosted a Whanau Hui at Rata with Amster Reedy as guest speaker.
Many thanks to the WSFD Team for supporting our mahi here in Whanganui.

Taranaki Smokefree/Auahi Kore Providers World Smokefree Day Activities 2005
Taranaki Smokefree/Auahi Kore Providers Group Consists of :
Piki Te Ora Nursing Services, Ruanui Health, Taranaki District Health Board Health Promotion and Health Protection Units, the Taranaki Cancer Society, Tui Ora Ltd, Te Kiikini Trust
The Group met from March through May to plan and coordinate activities. A major focus was print media with feature advertisements being placed in four of the local free community papers on the days closest to the 31st May. A new twist for two of the features was the use of the Vox Pop where both members of the public and health provider's "Wishes for a smokefree world" were included with their photos. It enabled us to get some fresh perspectives and the public were attracted to participants' photos and what they had to say.
Piki te Ora and the Cancer Society arranged displays in libraries and service centres in the smaller towns around Taranaki such as Manaia and Stratford.
On the Thursday 26th a display was set up at the warehouse in Hawera with the "smoking car' and another on Saturday at the New Plymouth Warehouse. Smokefree Car stickers were given out and the public were entered in a draw for car care products when they filled out a survey on smokefree homes and cars.
On World Smokefree Day a "Wishing Tree" was set up at the Taranaki Base Hospital cafeteria. Staff and the public wrote their wishes on "leaves" and placed them on the tree. The winner won and WSFD prize pack.
A radio campaign with a focus on the Wishes theme was run on the Radio Network stations to augment the national ads on smokefree domestic environments. MORE FM had WSFD competition and giveaways on WSFD.
WSFD resources were sent all schools and health providers and large employers in the region.
