Previous World Smokefree Days have been marked in a wide variety of ways throughout the country, with smokefree/auahi kore promoters applying the national theme to their local priorities.
The theme for World Smokefree Day 2007 was “Smokefree…it’s about us/ Kia Auahi Kore…mō tātou te kaupapa” and focused on the importance of a smokefree/ auahi kore future for our young people. This allowed promoters in various parts of the country to use the theme to highlight activities in their region that worked towards a smokefree future for young people e.g. smokefree parks and playgrounds, parents quitting smoking and/ or making their homes and cars smokefree, youth advocacy to ban point of sale tobacco displays etc.
The theme for World Smokefree Day 2005 and for World Smokefree Day 2006 was “Wish for a smokefree world. Wishes can come true/Wawatatia he ao auahi kore. Ka tutuki pea ngā moemoeā.
These World Smokefree Days both had a focus on second-hand smoke; and in particular exposure to second-hand smoke in the workplace, and exposure in places where children are present like homes, cars, and sporting settings.
The theme for World Smokefree Day 2004 was Take the smoke outside/Haria te Auahi ki waho, and for World Smokefree Day 2003 was Let’s clear the air for us/Ātea Wātea mō tātou.
