Theme and Focus

The focus for World Smokefree Day 2008 is on creating a smokefree/auahi kore future for the young people of Aotearoa New Zealand.  The successful 2007 theme will be repeated:

“Smokefree…it’s about us / Kia Auahi Kore mō tātou te kaupapa.”

‘Us’ are the young people of Aotearoa New Zealand. We are working towards a smokefree/ auahi kore future for them and with them. The theme was designed so it could be adapted to compliment the tobacco control priorities of different communities, e.g.

• Promoting quit attempts
• Extending smokefree environments such as playgrounds and public places
• Auahi Kore whare/waka
• Auahi Kore marae
• Smokefree schools/Auahi Kore kura
• Banning point of sale advertising
• Anti-industry activities
• Smokefree families/Whanau Auahi Kore
• Youth advocacy

All of these activities can contribute to reducing smoking initiation by young people.

This year there will be added emphasis on supporting quit attempts and we’ll be bringing you specific tips on how to focus on cessation locally.

Regional Smokefree Teams

Over the past few years, individuals and organisations with an interest in tobacco control in each region have formed into Regional Smokefree Teams to help ensure that events in each region support and complement each other. Having a Regional Smokefree Team or a local working group ensures a good mix of health promotion and legislative/enforcement knowledge.

The same approach is being taken in 2008, and information about World Smokefree Day will be sent to the contact person nominated by each team. To take part in World Smokefree day this year, either contact your regional team contact or contact us.

Team Activities

There are over 30 regional smokefree/ auahi kore teams registered for World Smokefree Day 2008. To learn about what teams have planned with their communities to celebrate World Smokefree Day, check out the page Team Activities.

Team Messageboard

Messageboard is now available.

The Team Messageboard is a new feature on trial for 2008. It is a place for members of World Smokefree Day teams to post and share their plans, ideas and tips for World Smokefree Day activities with other smokefree/ auahi kore promoters, advocates and enthusiasts around the country.

If you are a member of a World Smokefree Day team and would like to access the messageboard, click here.

Note: You need a password to sign-in to the messageboard. Contact your regional team coordinator for the password. All users of the messageboard need to sign-in with their work email address.
