Promoting the "Give Quitting a Go" at Sport Northland Footprints Waipoua 12km Fun Run/Walk |

WEST AUCKLAND:
Event
It was a success for Harbour Health’s event at Lynn Mall in West Auckland. Nine trained smoking cessation practitioners (of 6 different cultures) were on hand to give advice and hand out quit cards. Lynn Mall Unichem Pharmacy filled prescriptions for 58 smokers wavering the $5 cost of the first 50 quit cards.
An on-site true lung age test found a number of people in their 20s with lungs over 40 years, highlighting the silent damage that smoking is doing to their lungs.
Kara Rickard (off Smoking Not our Future campaign and Maori T.V. presenter) and the Academy Players (Breakers NZ) gave away spot prizes of Breakers T shirts/ sports balls and Smokefree products (such as bags, water bottles, mints, balloons etc) and provided plenty of exciting entertainment, beating the giant cigarettes and allowing some of the youngsters in the audience to join in and shoot a few baskets too.
Cultural performances (including Indian, Tongan and Korean) added beauty and colour to the day.
Media
There were interviews on Planet FM and Big FM radio with Suzy Cato and Harbour Health provided some free giveaways for the show. There was also an article in the Western Leader newspaper.

Primary health setting
All the medical centres were visited and material given to practice nurses and GP’s around giving quitting a go. Centres visited include Cromwell, Wanaka, and Roxburgh.
Pharmacies were visited in all areas and were given material to have displays in their windows and promoting quitting.
Hospitals:
Hospitals in Queenstown, the Lakes District Hospital and in Clyde the Dustan Hospital promoted the Quitline and staff were given tee shirts to wear.
Media
All the local free newspapers had advertising around quitting with the WSFD imagery for this year.
Stand
Te Ha O Te Oranga O Ngati Whatua set up a site using spyder boards at the foyer of their local Warehouse store. These boards had relevant 'Quit' messages, pamphlets, posters, hand outs, giveaways, balloons and quit information as well as lots of NRT resources (gum, lozenges and gum) donated by Northland DHB and The Quit Group.
These resources provided smokers with an opportunity to try the NRT whilst browsing around The Warehouse. This proved to be successful as many came back for a more in-depth assessment, aiming to be placed onto a Quit Programme.
The site was manned between 10am - 2pm, the relevant hours for those at risk. The overall aim for the day was to target anyone interested in quitting and the numbers spoken to varied extensively.
Media
Two weeks prior, the local radio station, Big River FM broadcasted messages about WSFD, encouraging those interested in seeking information around becoming smokefree to head down to the Warehouse for a chat. There were numerous callers talking about their experiences and offering help and advice on the day.
Fundraising
Te Ha O Te Oranga O Ngati Whatua supported 'at risk' Group "Whakatupuranga Whanau Puna" supporting WSFD by fundraising beside us with a sausage sizzle event which also included steak sandwiches and mussel chowder. This drew many whanau towards us, eventuating in some very interesting discussions and outcomes. Whakatupuranga Whanau Puna is a group involved with health and wellbeing options for their tamariki, whanau and extended whanau.
We have since had many quit related follow-ups and enquiries among those contacts made on the day, with some very good outcomes.

Breathtaking: Mauriora Te Ha photographic exhibition
This was displayed at the ‘Bring It On’ community whānau day at Te Araroa. Clare Webber photographed the photos and they featured 23 Tairawhiti locals who have battled tobacco addiction. Each image is teamed with a personal anecdote about the subject’s journey that are sometimes sad, sometimes funny but always honest. This exhibition also appeared at the Tairawhiti Smokefree Film Festival of Youth.

Primary Health Settings
Public Health South staff wrote an article in the Southland Green Prescription newsletter, distributed by Sport Southland about the plans for WSFD which focused on the role GPs have in being the catalyst for people to have a quit attempt. This followed with staff in Invercargill developing and distributing World Smokefree Day resource packs to various organisations around the Southland area, including General Practice offices, dental therapists, Maori and Pacific Island organisations and NGOs.
Pediatric Department
Staff wore the WSFD t-shirts throughout the month of May and there was a ‘Smoking Affects Lives’ photo exhibition display in the department. The Public Health staff provided afternoon tea for the staff involved for their contributions.
Stands
On the week of WSFD, the team was at the local tertiary institute - Southern Institute of Technology cafeteria in the lunch area and a whole day at The Warehouse handing out quit packs that contained both information regarding local cessation services and a sample NRT lozenge.

Displays
These were presented for a whole week at the South City and Hillcrest Medical clinics and Dinsdale WINZ to promote this year’s theme “Give quitting a go” and to advertise the new “Face the Facts” television campaign. The display-targeted initiative was co-ordinated by the (C.H.A.N.C.E.S.) group, to further encourage patients, staff and clients of these organisations to take advantage of the free community quit smoking services and subsidised patches and gum.
Feedback from the organisations has been very positive. The service manager for WINZ Dinsdale in particular said that the displays provoked some really healthy dialogue from staff and clients around personal responsibility for your own health and wellbeing. Many were unaware that the quit smoking services available were free and that they catered for all ethnicities. She hopes that the WINZ office in Dinsdale will be able to host other health focus campaigns in the near future.

Sports
For keen netballers in Te Awamutu, the smokefree team promoted their second World smokefree Day campaign at the netball courts on Saturday 30th with their huge gazebo and outrageous costumes, encouraging smokers to quit with free cessation advice, information, samples of patches and gum, and free activities and competitions for the kids.
The opportunity to promote WSFD at the netball courts allowed multiple messages to be disseminated to generations of families who have grown up playing netball. By providing a holistic approach to the promotions by targeting nana, mum, daughter and grand daughter, all at the same time, the chances are the benefits will be much far more sustainable.

Stalls
Information stalls were set up at Christchurch Womens and Christchurch public hospital with loads of information on quitting, Quit packs, Quit cards and lung capacity tests. There were lots of free giveaways to engage staff, public and visitors about quitting, Smokefree messages and Face the Facts.
90 Quit cards were completed and 350 Quit packs were given out. Both smokers and non-smokers were comfortable coming to the table. The staff also went to all the wards and gave them resources to distribute. All volunteers were run off their feet either giving away resources, engaging in conversation or walkabout to the wards.
Media
The Radio Network undertook a media campaign a couple of weeks before World Smokefree including free prizes and giveaways with discussions about quitting. The Black Thunders were at Cathedral Square on the day to exchange cigarettes for free NRT with lots of promotion around quitting. In addition the team had interviews with doctors on talk back radio and translation of quitting messages into Maori on Tahu FM.
Display
15 participants shared their stories for the ‘Smoking Affects Lives’ campaign. All very powerful and different stories. These were displayed on the day but will also serve as useful resources for other displays and promotions.
