Theme

The theme for WSFD 2009 was:

‘Me mutu – kia kaha/ Give quitting a go – you can do it!’

What’s the theme all about?

This theme provided an opportunity to focus on supporting those on their quitting journey, and the friends and whānau who helped them along the way.

It was also a call to create and strengthen both the environments that help people quit and to stay quit – smokefree homes, cars, marae, outdoor areas, social and cultural events, and the policies and practices that aid quitters – whether it was workplaces supporting staff to quit or health professionals asking smoking status and offering brief intervention.

Why focus on quitting smoking?

Over the last twelve months we’ve seen a lot of activity around quitting smoking and this is set to continue. The 2009 World Smokefree Day theme built on this momentum and provided local smokefree and auahi kore promoters with a national initiative to support their work. If you are not working in the cessation area, rather than changing your focus for a short time, you could use the World Smokefree Day messages/ resources as an ‘add-on’ to your existing work.

Regional WSFD Teams

Over the past few years, individuals and organisations with an interest in tobacco control in each region have formed into Regional WSFD Teams to help ensure that events in each region support and complement each other. Having a Regional WSFD Team or a local working group ensures a good mix of health promotion and legislative/enforcement knowledge.

The same approach was taken in 2009, and information about World Smokefree Day was sent to the contact person nominated by each team. To take part in World Smokefree day next year, either contact your regional team contact or contact us.

Team Activities

There were over 30 regional smokefree / auahi kore teams registered for World Smokefree Day 2009.

MID NORTH

Media:
Ngati Hine Health Trust Aukati Kai Paipa ran a radio promotion during the month of May on Ngatihine FM which involved sponsoring the night time slot from 6-9pm advertising quit smoking information, facts, advice, and benefits whilst launching the newly developed Aukati Kai Paipa Jingle “Give Quitting a Go”.  The promotion endorsed the existing Aukati Kai Paipa initiatives currently occurring in the community and the work being done by Aukati Kai Paipa smoking cessation practitioners.  The primary objective was to engage whanau to give quitting smoking a go.

WSFD was also promoted to the wider community through community groups and health providers within the mid north like Ringa Atawhai, Hauora o Kaikohe, Kawakawa Hospital, Tamariki Ora, Rural Youth Beat Health Clinic, Tapuhi (Nurses), Mid North Kohanga, Primary, Intermediate and Secondary Schools and GP Clinics in the Mid North.
WSFD resources were utilised on air as give-aways throughout the month of May, used as incentives for existing clients, and were included in Quit information packs for new clients.  A WSFD presentation was made at FAMILY START Whanau Day, up 20 families attended and each family received a WSFD pack.
WSFD promotion increased the awareness of the benefits of quitting smoking, raised the profile of Aukati Kai Paipa and increased demand for Aukati Kai Paipa smoking cessation services within the region.

NORTHLAND

Hospitals
Northland DHB used World Smokefree Day to introduce its new Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) Drug Protocols to staff and raise awareness that a hospital stay means patients can get support to become smokefree.  The new NRT Drug Protocols mean that nurses can give patients who smoke NRT patches, gum and lozenges to help them be smokefree during their hospital stay and to provide solutions for patients who smoke as the hospital buildings and grounds are smokefree at all times.
As a result of the WSFD 2009 promotion, there was an increase in use of NRT from NDHB Pharmacy for month of June.
Whangarei Hospital Smoking Cessation Practitioner has noticed more patients with NRT samples, an increase in patients with NRT charted in patient notes, having had ABC and patched from standing orders before being referred to Smoking Cessation Practitioner.  Patient referrals have doubled from 34 for month of May 2009 to 63 for month of June 2009.

Lynn Mall Unichem Pharmacy filled prescriptions for 58 smokers wavering the $5 cost of the first 50 quit cards.
An on-site true lung age test found a number of people in their 20s with lungs over 40 years, highlighting the silent damage that smoking is doing to their lungs.
Kara Rickard (off Smoking – Not our Future campaign and Maori T.V. presenter) and the Academy Players (Breakers NZ) gave away spot prizes of Breakers T shirts/ sports balls and Smokefree products (such as bags, water bottles, mints, balloons etc) and provided plenty of exciting entertainment, beating the giant cigarettes and allowing some of the youngsters in the audience to join in and shoot a few baskets too.
Cultural performances (including Indian, Tongan and Korean) added beauty and colour to the day.
Media
There were interviews on Planet FM and Big FM radio with Suzy Cato and Harbour Health provided some free giveaways for the show. There was also an article in the Western Leader newspaper.

DARGAVILLE

Stand
Te Ha O Te Oranga O Ngati Whatua set up a site using spyder boards at the foyer of their local Warehouse store. These boards had relevant 'Quit' messages, pamphlets, posters, hand outs, giveaways, balloons and quit information as well as lots of NRT resources (gum, lozenges and gum) donated by Northland DHB and The Quit Group.
These resources provided smokers with an opportunity to try the NRT whilst browsing around The Warehouse. This proved to be successful as many came back for a more in-depth assessment, aiming to be placed onto a Quit Programme.
The site was manned between 10am - 2pm, the relevant hours for those at risk. The overall aim for the day was to target anyone interested in quitting and the numbers spoken to varied extensively.
Media
Two weeks prior, the local radio station, Big River FM broadcasted messages about WSFD, encouraging those interested in seeking information around becoming smokefree to head down to the Warehouse for a chat.  There were numerous callers talking about their experiences and offering help and advice on the day.
Fundraising
Te Ha O Te Oranga O Ngati Whatua supported 'at risk' Group "Whakatupuranga Whanau Puna" supporting WSFD by fundraising beside us with a sausage sizzle event which also included steak sandwiches and mussel chowder. This drew many whanau towards us, eventuating in some very interesting discussions and outcomes.  Whakatupuranga Whanau Puna is a group involved with health and wellbeing options for their tamariki, whanau and extended whanau.
We have since had many quit related follow-ups and enquiries among those contacts made on the day, with some very good outcomes.

Public Health South staff wrote an article in the Southland Green Prescription newsletter, distributed by Sport Southland about the plans for WSFD which focused on the role GPs have in being the catalyst for people to have a quit attempt. C.H.A.N.C.E.S. (Waikato Smokefree Coalition)

Displays
These were presented for a whole week at the South City and Hillcrest Medical clinics and Dinsdale WINZ to promote this year’s theme “Give quitting a go” and to advertise the new “Face the Facts” television campaign.  The display-targeted initiative was co-ordinated by the (C.H.A.N.C.E.S.) group, to further encourage patients, staff and clients of these organisations to take advantage of the free community quit smoking services and subsidised patches and gum.
Feedback from the organisations has been very positive.  The service manager for WINZ Dinsdale in particular said that the displays provoked some really healthy dialogue from staff and clients around personal responsibility for your own health and wellbeing.  Many were unaware that the quit smoking services available were free and that they catered for all ethnicities.  She hopes that the WINZ office in Dinsdale will be able to host other health focus campaigns in the near future.

Sports
For keen netballers in Te Awamutu, the smokefree team promoted their second World smokefree Day campaign at the netball courts on Saturday 30th with their huge gazebo and outrageous costumes,  encouraging smokers to quit with free cessation advice, information, samples of patches and gum, and free activities and competitions for the kids.
The opportunity to promote WSFD at the netball courts allowed multiple messages to be disseminated to generations of families who have grown up playing netball.  By providing a holistic approach to the promotions by targeting nana, mum, daughter and grand daughter, all at the same time, the chances are the benefits will be much far more sustainable.
