In 2004 the World Smokefree Day theme was Take the smoke outside/Haria te auahi ki waho, with a focus on raising awareness about the damage that second-hand smoke can do to people's health, particularly to children. The goal for World Smokefree Day 2004 was to support and encourage Smokefree environments. Objectives included:
- focusing attention on the benefits of being Smokefree in several settings, such as 'Smokefree homes', and other settings
- providing local and national tobacco control workers with resources, and media releases etc to enable them to promote the chosen theme.
Regional teams around New Zealand organised a range of activities and events to celebrate and promote World Smokefree Day 2004, backed by resources provided by the World Smokefree Day group.
Some of the promotional events that were held around the country in 2004 included:
- South Auckland – a full programme of activities on the day including display stands, a smoking cessation coach, face painting, some korero for radio (bilingual), meetings and distribution of World Smokefree Day packs
- Dunedin – a poster competition was organised for Year 9 and 10 graphics students which produced some great work
- Hawke's Bay – World Smokefree Day promotional kits were handed out to over 2400 programme participants at Nga Kura Auahi Kore - Kicking the Habit" programme presentations delivered by the Choices Clinic, Kahungunu Health Services
- Invercargill – a competition was held for early childhood centres to win a healthy lunch by demonstrating they had engaged parents in looking at smokefree cars and homes
- Marlborough – a local community college ran a smokefree carwash, speaking to all drivers coming through the carwash about taking smoke outdoors and handing out pamphlets
- North Shore – Childcare centres in central Auckland took the plunge and organised large displays of posters and give aways including World Smokefree Day T-shirts and balloons
- Northland – World Smokefree Day packs were handed out at four main Northland hospitals to celebrate the hospital buildings and grounds going smokefree on World Smokefree Day 31 May 2004
- South Canterbury – an ashtray-throwing competition was held at the local polytechnic. Competitors had to specify the smoking status of their home then had 10 seconds to throw as many ashtrays as they could into a bin
- Wanganui – drama skits on the smokefree theme were enjoyed by over 600 students at a school-based event organised by community health workers
- Wellington – Porirua College organised a concert by Smokefree Rockquest bands plus informal soccer and basketball games for students on its smokefree register
- Whakatane/Eastern Bay of Plenty – to celebrate the Bay of Plenty district health board becoming totally smokefree on World Smokefree Day, Whakatane hospital staff hung posters and balloons and presented giveaways to staff, patients and visitors.
